Volunteer Spotlight: Dr. Steve Hoshiwara

Medicine for the Body—and the Soul

To Dr. Steve Hoshiwara, being a physician is about more than just medical knowledge—it’s about ministry. A longtime volunteer at The Neighborhood Christian Clinic, Dr. Hoshiwara embodies what it means to live out the Gospel through medicine.

“I would hope, I would pray, that what defines me first is my relationship with Christ,” he says. “I’d like to be remembered as a good Christian more than a good doctor.”

That quiet humility and unwavering faith are evident in every patient encounter. Whether he’s performing a routine physical or navigating a difficult diagnosis, Dr. Hoshiwara makes space for God in the exam room.

“My identity in Christ dictates how I practice medicine—not the other way around.”

As the owner of a private practice, he’s had the freedom to shape his clinic environment to reflect his beliefs. Christian music plays in the background. Scripture verses line the walls. Time is built in to pray with patients—when they welcome it—and to listen deeply to both physical and spiritual needs.

“I have a good supply of books in the office—on marriage, addiction, relationships, apologetics. I give them out and trust that the Holy Spirit will use them.”

But Dr. Hoshiwara is quick to acknowledge that it’s not just the books or setting that matter. It’s the relationships.

“Most of my patients I’ve known for years—some for decades. They see how I live my faith, and that opens the door for all kinds of questions about God.”

He also sees his workplace as a mission field. Weekly staff meetings begin with prayer and devotionals—open to all, but especially meaningful for those who share his faith. It’s one more way he models servant leadership and creates a culture of spiritual care.

“That meeting really brings our staff together as a work family. I’m praying we’ll implement it even more.”

Beyond Phoenix, Dr. Hoshiwara partners with international ministries that offer mobile medical clinics in areas with limited access to healthcare—and even less access to the Gospel.

“People walk for miles to see the doctor. We do exams, give medication, and share the hope of Jesus. Their motto is ‘medicine for the body and medicine for the soul.’”

Still, he calls the Neighborhood Christian Clinic his “reset button.”   “It’s my weekly reminder of why I went into medicine. You always get way more than you give.”

Even off the clock, Dr. Hoshiwara carries the calling of a healer and witness.

“Whether it’s in the grocery store or a parking lot—when someone comes up to ask a question, I try to see that as an opportunity, not an interruption.”

There’s a boldness to his faith, but it’s grounded in grace.

“There may come a time when we have to choose to lose our jobs to follow Christ. But most of my patients know what they’re signing up for. They’ve always been respectful.”

What drives him is simple: the desire to serve with excellence—not just as a doctor, but as a disciple.

“When I die, I want people to remember me as a good Christian—more than a good doctor.”

We’re grateful for Dr. Hoshiwara’s servant heart, steady presence, and passion for sharing Jesus through healthcare. His life is a living example of whole-person healing, powered by prayer and rooted in love.
