A Classroom Lesson Finds Its Heart at the Clinic

March 10, 2026 | Clinic Highlights

Recently, Angie, Dr. Andrea, and Dr. Allison welcomed students from Neighborhood Ministries to Neighborhood Christian Clinic to complement their course of study in public health and the five social determinants of health.

For these students, the visit was more than a tour. It was a chance to see how the ideas they are learning in class take shape in real life through compassionate, whole-person care.

Angie’s Heart for the Mission

Angie began by sharing her heart for the mission of the Clinic. She told the students that the same commitment described on her LinkedIn profile is what first drew her to the work of NCC. Her dedication to helping address poverty, injustice, and marginalization closely aligns with the Clinic’s mission to care for uninsured and underserved neighbors with compassion and dignity.

That helped students understand that public health is not only about systems and services. It is also about calling, conviction, and a willingness to serve people who are often overlooked.

The Five Social Determinants of Health in Real Life

The students’ visit centered on the five social determinants of health, which are the conditions that shape a person’s health and quality of life. These include economic stability, education access and quality, health care access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context.

In other words, health is influenced by much more than what happens in a doctor’s office or dental chair. It is also shaped by whether someone has stable housing, transportation, community support, educational opportunity, and access to the care they need.

A Story They Won’t Forget

Dr. Andrea speaks with students from Neighborhood Ministries at Neighborhood Christian Clinic about public health and the five social determinants of health.

Dr. Andrea shared a patient moment that brought all five social determinants of health to life. It was a story about a young girl who came into the Clinic feeling overwhelmed and unwell. As trust began to build, she eventually opened up about what was happening in her life and how it was affecting her health. It was an important reminder to the students that it is okay to talk with your doctor not only about physical symptoms, but also about your feelings, your stress, and the situations you are facing, because those things can have a real impact on your health too.

Dr. Andrea gave the students a clearer understanding of what public health looks like when it becomes personal. Behind every appointment is a fuller story, and behind every patient is a set of challenges and pressures that can either support healing or make it harder to achieve.

A Calling to Care

Dr. Allison speaks with students from Neighborhood Ministries at Neighborhood Christian Clinic about oral health, dentistry, and whole-person care.

Dr. Allison then shared her own journey into dentistry, giving the students both a lighthearted memory and a deeply meaningful moment that shaped her calling. She said that long before dental school, there was already a hint of what was ahead. In kindergarten, one of her friends had a loose tooth, and she graciously said, “I can help you with that,” and pulled the tooth out.

But the deeper turning point came years later while she was working as a social worker and helping a veteran get back on his feet. He told her he was not ready to see his family again because he did not want them to see how bad his teeth were. That moment stayed with her. It revealed how deeply dental health can affect a person’s dignity, confidence, relationships, and sense of readiness to reenter life.

For the students, it was a powerful reminder that oral health is not separate from overall health. It is part of the full picture of human flourishing.

Dr. Allison also took the opportunity to share a simple but important reminder about oral health. As she gave each student a new toothbrush, she encouraged them to replace their toothbrush every three months and again after they have been sick, underscoring how small habits can play a meaningful role in overall health.

Why Your Support Matters

Together, Angie, Dr. Andrea, and Dr. Allison gave these students a vivid picture of what public health looks like through compassionate, whole-person care. They helped them see that the five social determinants of health are not just academic concepts. They are real factors affecting real people every day. At NCC, those realities are met with practical care, personal dignity, and the love of Christ.

That is one reason your support of Neighborhood Christian Clinic matters so deeply. Because of faithful donors, patients receive more than an appointment. They receive compassionate care that recognizes the real-life barriers affecting their health and offers hope in the middle of them.

We are deeply grateful for the donors who make this kind of ministry possible. Your generosity helps NCC care for uninsured and underserved patients while also helping train and inspire the next generation. Thank you for helping make Neighborhood Christian Clinic a place where compassionate care and Christ-centered mission come together every day.
