From Volunteer to Dental School: How One Student Found His Calling at the Neighborhood Christian Clinic
When Judah Frazier first began looking for a place to volunteer, he wasn’t simply searching for clinical experience. He wanted to serve somewhere that was making a genuine difference.
After researching healthcare organizations in the Valley, one place stood out: the Neighborhood Christian Clinic.
“This was one of the clinics in an area that I felt needed the most help,” Judah said.
More than a year later, that decision has helped shape the course of his future.
Today, Judah is preparing to attend the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco—becoming one of the Clinic’s student volunteers to successfully gain admission to dental school.
More Than Volunteer Hours
Over the past year, Judah completed more than 100 volunteer hours at the Clinic, serving alongside the dental team and caring for uninsured and underserved patients.
While the experience helped strengthen his dental school application, Judah says the impact went far beyond building a resume.
“Dr. V’s mentorship was incredible,” he said. “He gave me direction on what I should be doing and what I should focus on. It helped me create a picture of where I wanted to be and the steps I needed to take to get there.”
Dr. Victor Vellon and volunteer coordinator Ana Blanca also provided letters of recommendation that helped support Judah’s dental school application.
Learning What Compassion Looks Like
When asked what stood out most during his time at the Clinic, Judah didn’t point to a single patient encounter.
Instead, he pointed to the culture.
“Every patient was treated the exact same way,” he said. “Compared to some of the other clinics I’ve worked at, the people here really care about the patients, and it’s apparent in everything they do.”
That commitment to treating every person with dignity left a lasting impression.
“That’s actually why I’ve stayed here so long,” Judah said. “It’s a great group of people to look up to.”
One experience, however, remains especially memorable.
A man who had fallen near the railroad tracks beside the Clinic arrived in severe pain after suffering a serious jaw injury. Judah watched as Dr. Vellon immediately stepped in, administering anesthetic that provided instant relief before the patient could be transported for additional treatment.
“Being able to see people come in with an immediate problem and meet them where they are—that’s important,” Judah said.
Seeing Faith in Action
The Neighborhood Christian Clinic exists to restore health and restore lives through whole-person care. For Judah, that mission became something he witnessed firsthand every week.
“Absolutely, my faith has been strengthened,” he said. “I can see God working through this place.”
Whether caring for patients, praying with them, or simply showing compassion to those who often have nowhere else to turn, Judah saw a healthcare model that reflected Christ’s love in practical ways.
Investing in the Next Generation
As Judah prepares for dental school, he is still exploring what area of dentistry he may eventually pursue. For now, he is focused on learning and growing through the opportunities ahead.
His journey is also a reminder of the impact supporters make possible.
When asked what he would say to donors who invest in the Clinic’s mission, Judah didn’t hesitate.
“There’s real good being done here,” he said. “The care that the team gives everyone who walks through those doors is second to none. The need is enormous, and it’s amazing to see people step up and be there for that.”
Because of faithful donors, volunteers, and healthcare professionals, patients receive compassionate care. And students like Judah receive something equally valuable: mentorship, experience, and a vision for using their future careers to serve others.
As the Clinic continues to train and equip the next generation of Christian healthcare professionals, Judah’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when faith, service, and purpose come together.
