More Than Medicine: Why Michael Chose the Clinic
Michael didn’t come to the Clinic just to check a box for medical school.
He came looking for something more.
A recent graduate with a background in biochemistry and microbiology, Michael was exploring his next step, considering medical school and the kind of physician he hoped to become. He wanted clinical experience, yes. But he also wanted a place where his faith and his future in medicine didn’t feel separated.
He found that through a simple recommendation from his sister.
“She told me there was a place in downtown Phoenix,” he said. “A clinic where my values would be represented.”
A Place Where All of You Matters
Michael speaks four languages. Romanian, Spanish, English, and now German. He’s just as comfortable talking about research and therapeutics as he is about literature, psychology, and culture.
He describes himself simply:
“I’ve always been someone who lives in both worlds. I love science, but I also love people.”
That’s what drew him in.
At the Clinic, he found a place where medicine isn’t reduced to symptoms and prescriptions. It’s personal. It’s relational. It considers where someone lives, what they carry, and what gives them hope.
That’s not accidental. It’s the very heart of our mission: caring for the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.
The Moment That Changed Everything
Early on, Michael was still figuring out where he fit. He tried different roles, including translating for Spanish-speaking patients.
Then one moment stayed with him.
He was in the room with a patient. The provider began to pray.
Michael translated.
“I thought it was very special,” he said. “You’re not just treating the illness. You’re giving someone hope.”
He saw something shift in how he understood medicine.
Not just diagnosis. Not just treatment plans.
Connection.
Hope.
A reminder that even in sickness, a person is more than what’s wrong with them.
What Healthcare Can Be
Michael is quick to name something many people feel but rarely say out loud.
Modern healthcare can become mechanical.
“We focus on the body, the mechanisms, the drug, and then we send you on your way,” he said.
But that’s not what he sees here.
At the Clinic, he’s watched providers pause. Listen. Pray. Care about what’s happening outside the exam room.
For many patients, especially those who feel overlooked or pushed aside by the system, that changes everything.
“They can come here and just receive care,” he said. “Real care.”
Why Your Support Matters
When asked what he would say to donors, Michael didn’t hesitate.
Healthcare is complex. Needs are constant. And for patients without resources, the system can feel impossible to navigate.
But places like the Clinic exist because people choose to give.
“Resources are what make this possible,” he said. “It takes people and support to create a place like this.”
A place where someone can walk in, be seen, be cared for, and be reminded they are not alone.
The Kind of Doctor He’s Becoming
Michael isn’t just preparing for a career in medicine.
He’s shaping what kind of doctor he will be.
One who understands research and innovation.
One who values science deeply.
And one who never forgets the person sitting in front of him.
Because of what he’s experienced here, he knows now:
Medicine is not just about healing the body.
It’s about restoring hope.
